Redwood National Park was established in 1968 to protect land adjacent to California's redwood parks formed in the 1920s. Currently, the states and states are managed under a joint agreement between the National Park Service and the California Department of Parks and Recreation. The combined parks stretch over 110,000 acres, including 37 miles of unspoiled California coastline.
Since Delta is the only commercial airline flying to the local airport, it is expensive to fly to the area. Although not near an Amtrak line, there is a bus service from the Amtrak stations to the Redwood area, which may be the cheapest way to get into the park. Here are three tips / hints for an effective land trip to / from Redwood:
First, Martinez, California, is your Amtrak connection to the Redwood National Park. The San Joaquin line from Bakersfield (with connecting line from San Diego and Los Angeles) and Oakland (with connecting line from San Francisco) stops there. Martinez is also on the Capitol Corridor line of San Jose, Oakland and Sacramento (with Reno's connection). From Martinez, two Amtrak Thruway coaches drive at 10:25 am and 3:25 pm for the six- to seven-hour drive to the Redwood area.
Second, because there is no shuttle service at Redwood National Park, you need to rent a car to see the entire park. So McKinleyville at Arcata Airport is the destination for your bus trip. When you arrive in front of the car rental counters in the early evening, you have the choice between companies you can rent from. If you arrive with the car rental counters closed, you can take a free shuttle bus to your hotel for the night and return to the airport in the morning to rent your car. There are a number of hotels in the area offering this service. Buses back to Martinez leave McKinleyville at 6:15 am and 10:30 am.
Third, the need to make reservations for the train part of your trip depends on the service you use. Although the Capitol Corridor trains are not reserved, the San Joaquins are only reserved trains. Although you do not need a reservation for the Thruway Motorcoach Connection Service, you may receive discounted pre-sale rates or special rates for students and seniors if you purchase both your train and bus ticket in advance.
